I chose to read this book after listening to Leo LaPorte and Steve Gibson gush over this book for months. I am very glad I did. It was so well done on so many levels. At first, it starts out as a modern spin on traditional Hard SF. But it is much more than that. The closest thing I can think to compare it to is Tad Williams' Otherland. I have already begun the sequel and can't wait to find out how the story ends.
By the time, you get done with the first chapter you know that this is not your typical fantasy novel. But what you don't know is that that you have barely scratched the surface of this novel. The ending wasn't totally unpredictable, but not immediately apparent, either. I am definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.
I really wasn't quite sure what to make of this when I started this book. It seems to be headed in a certain direction and then suddenly changes course. Twice, in fact. But it all makes sense eventually. In the end, the book tells a complete story but leaves a lot of unanswered questions for us to worry about. I am definitely looking forward to the next title.
